The Type B gearbox most popular gear ratio is 2.58 to 1. Ratios of 2.24 and 2.0 to 1 are also available where a smaller diameter must be used or more speed is desired. This gearbox is designed for Rotax 447 and 503 engines. Normally, the maximum prop diameter for a Type B gearbox is 68" x 2-blades or 64" x 3-blades. Anything larger and the engine will idle roughly below 2,000 rpm or will be hard to start. For more information on the effects of prop inertia, see Measuring Prop Inertia , Rotax Service Bulletin #11UL91. The B gearbox weighs 9.9 pounds. The Type C gearbox uses a 2.62-, 3.00-, 3.47- or 4.00-to-1 ratio. Use this box on Rotax 503, 582 and 618 engines, with a maximum prop of 72" x 3-blades. If in doubt about the prop you wish to use on this box, refer to Measuring Prop Inertia , Rotax Service Bulletin #11UL91. The Type C gearbox weighs 17.6 pounds. The Type E gearbox is the similar to the Type C , but has a built in electric starter activated by a sprag clutch. The starter adds only 1.5" to the length of the Type C gearbox and allows the use of the standard recoil on the magneto end as a back-up starter. The cost of the Type E is less than a Type C and a magneto end starter system. It also weighs considerably less at 24.7 pounds. Rotax 2-Cycle Engines: All gearbox tractors are left-hand. All gearbox pushers are right-hand.
